Galilean Night at Sydney Observatory Discover the seas on the Moon and the moons of Jupiter! Be Galileo for the night! On Friday 23 October Sydney Observatory will expand its normal evening tour to take part in the Galilean Nights being held around the world. These special nights are one of the key events of the International Year of Astronomy.

The evening at Sydney Observatory will start with a short talk about the Italian scientist Galileo and the epoch-making observations of the Moon and Jupiter he made through his telescope four centuries ago. The talk will be followed by sessions in the 3-D Space Theatre and, weather permitting, telescope viewings of the Moon and Jupiter, which are both in favourable positions in the sky, as well as other objects.

Celebrate International Year of Astronomy 2009 – a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture.

FREE TELESCOPE VIEWING - 7PM TO 9.30PM
See the Moon, Jupiter and other celestial objects through telescopes.

The Astronomical Association of Qld, Brisbane Astronomical Society, Redlands Astronomical Society, SE Qld Astronomical Society and the Southern Astronomical Society will all lend valuable support by having members operate telescopes set up on the lawns outside the Planetarium.

SPECIAL PLANETARIUM MINI-SHOWS
AT JUST $5 PER PERSON IN THE COSMIC SKYDOME

Sessions at 5.45pm, 6.30pm, 7.15pm, 8.00pm and 8.45pm
These shows will feature background about the International Year of Astronomy, the recently named asteroid “Brisbane”, and a tour of the evening’s celestial highlights in Brisbane’s recreated sky.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE
Scouts will provide a sausage sizzle.
